How To Successfully Decorate Your Home With Your Spouse

How To Successfully Decorate Your Home With Your Spouse

The way you decorate your home can have an impact on your relationship with your spouse as it can set the tone for the environment you both live in. A well-decorated home can create a warm and inviting atmosphere, to help build positive feelings and intimacy between you. Where as if your home is cluttered or disorganised, it can create stress and tension between partners. Click here to find out more on how clutter can cause us stress.
Decorating your home can be an opportunity for couples to communicate and make decisions together, and it can also be a fun creative activity…Although it’s not always unicorns and rainbows!
I had many a melt downs on mine and Chris’ last renovation project together and did have to briefly leave the house to cool off!
😅 You and your partner aren’t going to always share the same love, taste and style!
.
Chris and I actually ended up winning a competition for our kitchen renovation with B&Q, something that would definitely not have happened if we didn’t work together (or went for that black kitchen 😉)

I have found it is important to be open to each other's opinions to find a balance between your individual tastes. Chris would have had a black kitchen if I agreed, but it’s important to create a space that both partners are happy living with and this can often be a challenge.
If your partner is happy for you to have full reign and make all the decisions then YAY for you, (although I can imagine this would get a bit annoying).
.

BUT if not, I’ve put together some tips for successfully decorating your home with your significant other without too many rows.

Communicate: Before you start decorating, have a discussion with your spouse about your individual preferences and styles. This can help you both understand each other's tastes and avoid any misunderstandings. If you’ve read ‘Curating Your Home’ perhaps do the mood board activity together or show your partner the mood board you have created so they have a good idea of your vision.
.
Compromise: More than likely you will both have different preferences, so it's important to find a way to combine your individual styles into a cohesive design. This may require some compromises, but the result will be a space that both partners are happy with. If there is something you are struggling to compromise on, try to show them examples of similar homes so they can better picture what you mean and imagine it in your home.
.
Involve each other: When decorating, make sure to involve your spouse in the process. Ask for their opinions and ideas, and consider their suggestions. Doing things together can help strengthen your relationship and create a sense of teamwork.
.
Create shared spaces: Decorate areas of your home that are meant to be shared, such as the living room or bedroom, in a way that both partners feel comfortable and relaxed in. This can help create a sense of intimacy and togetherness.
.
Make it personal: Incorporate personal touches and sentimental items into your decor. This can include family photos, your favourite artwork, and other meaningful items that reflect your shared history and values.
.
Comfort is key: Creating a comfortable and welcoming environment is key to a happy relationship at home. Choose furniture and decor that you both find comfortable and relaxing. Finally, enjoy the process:
Decorating can be a fun and enjoyable experience for both of you. Try not to take the whole process too seriously.
