Dark Painted Furniture Makeovers To Give You Inspiration
Last Monday I shared with you my favourite neutral painted furniture makeovers, so this week I am taking you to the dark side to check out my favourite dark furniture makeovers!
Paint is powerful, even now after four years of upcycling and painting furniture it amazes me how much something can transform with some TLC and a pot of paint!! Check out my favourites painted by moi, below 👇🏻

This French dresser was impressive even before painting it. The photos do not do the size of this dresser justice, and with it being the first thing you see in my clients hallway she wanted it to make a beautiful impact upon entry. We chose Farrow and Ball ‘Hague Blue’ for the whole piece and kept the original hardware, this dark blue is now one of my absolute go to’s and a colour I always recommend to clients when they say they like blue! Claire has said she now gets complimented all the time on this beautiful dresser and I am definitely not surprised!

Before being painted, a lot of you told me that this is a piece you wouldn’t have given a second look. It is a solid oak dressing table with beautiful shape and detail but I have to say the brown before, dated this piece significantly. After toying with a couple of colour options, I kept going back to the idea of black and I couldn’t be happier with the final look! I sprayed the original handles gold to make them ‘pop’ which brings the piece right up to date! This piece got snapped up fairly quickly by a lovely customer named Shelagh, who was searching for the perfect piece to turn into a vanity unit for her bathroom, (see photo below) how cool does that look?!

This chest of drawers will forever be one of my favourites. This piece sold within a day or two of listing and I had many people comment on how much they loved this colour! I used Fusion Mineral Paint ‘Homestead Blue’ for this makeover but wanted to create depth and darken it slightly more. I applied ‘Rust Oleum Dark Wax’ in generous amounts and worked from the outside of the drawers, in, to create the feeling of depth. Cup handles brought this piece right up to date and the antique brass effect works perfectly against this beautiful blue! This credenza is such a beautiful example of a sideboard, however when the piece came to me it was thickly painted in black garage floor paint 😬 which I spent many hours sanding off and then prepping the piece properly to be refinished. The credenza is now painted in ‘Green Smoke’ from Farrow and Ball, which is a sophisticated green that pairs well with many different colours. My client had hints of pink in her bedroom and so I painted the other furniture in her bedroom using ‘Sulking Room Pink’ from Farrow and Ball and all the pieces work perfectly together. This green also compliments the raw wood we chose to leave exposed really beautifully and the gold effect handles finish off this makeover!

My client commissioned me to paint this piece to match another that I had refinished for him. He loved the dark bar style handles and they perfectly compliment the rest of the chest of drawers, giving this vintage piece a modern twist. These have been painted in Fusion Mineral Paint ‘Soapstone’ with dark wax from Rust Oleum layered over the top to create depth and a slightly darker colour.

And finally, these bedside tables which were a simple yet impactful transformation. The original handles were kept as they worked well with the rest of the bedsides details. After sanding them both I painted them in Fusion Mineral Paint ‘Homestead Blue’ and again used my favourite dark wax from Rust Oleum to highlight the details and add depth. I also used the wax on the legs to accentuate their wonderful curves! These bedside are currently available and can be found here in the shop section of my website!
