How Having A Focal Point Will Help Your Design Process

How Having A Focal Point Will Help Your Design Process

Last week I spoke to you about why it is super important to create a mood board when designing a space! This leads me on to how having a focal point within your design can help you create your mood board and help you design your space with more ease!
🙋🏼‍♀️
Do you ever wonder how designers seemingly effortlessly, manage to create a ‘curated’ feel within their spaces? This is because absolutely every fine detail within their design has been considered. From the colour palette, to the furniture, right down to the accessories, soft furnishings and what aspect the windows face.
Usually however, they will start with a focal point. By focal point, I mean something which captures the ‘audience’s’ attention first. This doesn’t mean it has to be something really lairy, bold, or brightly coloured, it could be a statement sofa, a WOW piece of furniture, the fireplace, a stand out wallpaper or piece of artwork.
It probably doesn’t come as a surprise, but I personally love to use my painted furniture as a focal/starting point to my designs. I often think about the furniture and its design first and work the rest of the scheme from there. Here are a couple of my favourite ‘statement focal pieces’ that I have created 👇🏻
.
Large dresser painted in Farrow and Ball Hague Blue
My client wanted this mahousive French dresser to be the focus of her hallway! We opted for a sophisticated blue to really make a statement.
.
Large sideboard painted in Farrow and Ball Green Smoke
This gorgeous credenza is now the focal point of my clients bedroom!
.
Childrens bookcase in blue and orange
I sourced this bookcase for my client who wanted a statement bookcase for her sons bedroom with colours that went with the rest of the scheme.

I am currently midway through our own bathroom renovation. The space isn’t huge, however I wanted to create a focal point of the bathroom vanity. I didn’t want an ‘off the shelf’ vanity or to have something super generic, so we rearranged the layout of the bathroom so that the vanity is now the first thing you see as you enter the bathroom (who wants to look at a toilet first off?!)…
… So I sourced a small vintage cabinet and painted it in Little Greene ‘Joanna’, fixed scaffold boards to the top for a rustic vibe and set the marble sink on to them with a chrome mixer tap. This one piece, my ‘focal point’, become the catalyst for the rest of the bathroom design. By starting with this ‘focal point’ I didn’t struggle from overwhelm when designing the rest of the bathroom. It meant the rest of the design flowed naturally and evolved and working in this way means our bathroom has a put together curated feel. AND I managed to create a completely bespoke vanity that no one else will have! Win win!

Vanity painted in black with gold sink
Here is a piece of furniture that I had originally sourced and painted for my website, a client bought it and turned it into a vanity unit. This piece is a dressing table, however there are no rules in design to say you have to use something conventionally. What a brilliant focal point for Shelagh’s bathroom!
.
As soon as my own bathroom is finished, I will be sharing a blog post to show you exactly what we have done, talk you through the design process in more detail and how using the vanity as a focal point guided the rest of the design. I will also give you my top tips for renovating your bathroom and give you the big reveal of this vanity unit I have just banged on to you about, so I hope you will think it is as special as I do!!  🙌🏻
